Am I ready for a Staycation?

I am a jumbled bag of delight and anxiety as I put on my face mask, pack the car and head over to FIVE Palm Jumeirah for their Stay & Dine Package. At that time, the UAE just announced that private beaches were allowed to open to hotel guests. Going to a hotel stocked with strangers will not thrill everyone at this time. Many people are understandably anxious; however, the FIVE Palm Jumeirah seeks to assuage guests with its released statement “ensuring and maintaining the highest levels of safety and security”. These steps include “hospital-grade disinfectants” in all guest rooms.

It is a personal choice whether to tiptoe outside your front door just to take out the garbage. Many people are uneasy and this is not an advocacy piece encouraging you to drawn breath, stick out your chest and brave the new world starting with the FIVE Palm Jumeirah. My visit was a personal choice and, for several personal reasons, I took advantage of FIVE’s Stay & Dine package.

Evidently, I was certainly not the only one. Step forward a barrage of residents like yours truly looking for weekend staycations. Pale, sun-deprived expats released from their homes, stretching out into the world in search of sand, sun and glimmers of their former lives. Would nostalgia be re-lived or would this be that scene from Heston’s Planet of the Apes where the beach reveals the world has forever changed?

FIVE Palm Jumeirah is a little like Wonka’s Chocolate factory. The former Viceroy hotel glitters with gold luring trendy partygoers. Oh yes, FIVE Palm Jumeirah is known to be a good time hotel. FIVE’s infamous 55 m long pool is littered with Instagram / TikTok flexing hard bodies who survive on a neat diet of likes and #yolos. The pools are now open for guests and visitors. During my visit, none of FIVE’s, wait for it, five pools are open due to local authority COVID-related restrictions.

FIVE Palm Jumeirah: Checking In

Our first sign of ‘different’ comes before we step out of the car. Valet parking is a thing of the past. A (reassuringly) masked and latex-gloved security guard invites me to ‘self-park’ in their free on-site parking facility. The compromise is that the hotel visibly busy staff take our suitcases from the car trunk and wheel them to the reception. I am more than happy with this. We park then wait to check-in under a gilded, brassy reception among the Beautiful People in organised, socially-distant lines.

The room is fizzing with anticipation notwithstanding the fact the hotel is also dry due to COVID19 restrictions in the UAE. I admire the hotel’s best foot forward attitude to efficiently check people into their rooms (a fact I will return to later). Our room was ready even at 2 pm when check-in is not officially until 3 pm.

FIVE Palm Jumeirah: Our Superior Room

Our Stay & Dine Superior Double Room is a generous size for two people for an overnight or even a weekend stay. The front door reveals a short corridor equipped with built-in wardrobes. This pathway opens up into a bright, pale-coloured bedroom sporting a king-sized bed. It is a modern room with pops of teal, a seafoam-striped sofa, a reflective pearl and brass coffee table, brass lighting and brass bedside tables. A repeat, geometric pattern wall adds texture and exaggerates the sense of space in an already large room. Suggestions of art deco whisper throughout with light features and a large teal and brass stand. The vibe is cool, with character. The bedroom is equipped with espresso machines, a small bar fridge (curiously empty), a large flatscreen TV, sockets, USB chargers and reliable WiFi. The high-speed WIFI did not skip a beat anywhere in the hotel including the beach, sea, pool and restaurants. All the better to capture every moment and post it online. FIVE knows its clientele.

FIVE Palm Jumeirah: Room Views

Would I return to FIVE Palm Jumeirah?

I would come back for one of the Sea View rooms for a Stay & Dine again. Dubai is spoiled for luxury hotels. The Palm alone is replete with options. FIVE’s views, laid back approach and party vibe help it stand out among some other options on the Palm.

Who should come to Five Palm Jumeirah?

Partygoers, couples, young couples, beachgoers, weekend and long weekend travellers and people who like creature comforts.

Family-friendly?

This will depend on your circumstances. I only saw one couple with children during our stay at FIVE. I did not see a dedicated play area for kids. There is plenty of visibility for parents to watch their kids playing on the beach in the multiple pools. Sadly pets are not allowed. Yes, I consider pets family!

Disabled friendly?

The hotel is wheelchair accessible with elevators, wheel-in showers and grab rails. Shower chairs, hoists, scooters and wheelchairs are also available for hire from the hotel in advance. Airport transfers in wheelchair adapted vehicles are also available on request.
