Ansitz Heufler by Norbert Niederkofler: The Short Story

Ansitz Heufler by Norbert Niederkofler is a historic, period property dating back to 1580, nestled within the Anterselva Valley. Originally built and owned by the noble Hohenbühel zu Heufler family, it is now a boutique hotel under the management of Norbert Niederkofler, the celebrated chef behind the three-Michelin-starred Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler in nearby Brunico. The intimate property offers a perfect getaway for couples, small families and those looking to explore the nearby mountains and slopes for skiing or hiking.

“Ansitz Heufler is a natural extension of our Cook the Mountain philosophy,” says Chef Norbert Niederkofler. “It is a place where hospitality becomes a vehicle for promoting culture, identity, and authentic relationships with the territory. It is a living space, one that speaks of history and of the future, and that reflects our vision of respect for both nature and local communities.”

Ansitz Heufler by Norbert Niederkofler: The Suites and Rooms

Ansitz Heufler features ten luxury rooms and suites. These include a 4‑person King Suite, several 2–3‑person Suites, Junior Suites, and Deluxe double rooms. All accommodations blend sleek contemporary comforts (plush linens, rainfall showers and bidets) with signature Alpine character. Exposed Swiss‑pine roof beams, pine‑parquet floors and larch‑wood furniture lend warmth, while large picture windows frame mountain views.

The King Suite, for example, features a bright Stube – a traditional Tyrolean parlour – with original wood panelling. It leads into a spacious bedroom and a well‑appointed marble bath for those who want to slink into the tub after long hikes and days hitting the slopes. Even the simpler Deluxe doubles feel rich and inviting: larch‑wood floors, wood‑beam ceilings and subtle fabrics combine to suggest a modern alpine chalet. Because the house is intimate in scale, each suite is quiet and feels more like a private apartment than a bland, corporate hotel room.

Ansitz Heufler by Norbert Niederkofler: The Stube.

Entering Ansitz Heufler feels like walking into a living museum of Tyrolean heritage. The manor’s Renaissance design was compassionately restored throughout the property with clear attention to detail and a restrained approach that allows the historical property’s period features to speak for themselves.

In every detail, from timber-beamed ceilings to thick stone arches and antique wooden doors carved with family crests. At the heart of the home lies the Herrenstube – a traditional wood-panelled parlour that is the crown jewel of Ansitz Heufler’s historic interiors. This cosy parlour, entirely encased in gleaming Swiss pine panels, is adorned with intricate 16th-century inlays and centred around an old green tiled stove that has warmed the room for centuries.

The warming perfume of the wood is pervasive, especially during the winter months. The overall effect is immersive and sympathetic without ever feeling like a static museum.

Ansitz Heufler by Norbert Niederkofler: The Osteria and Lounge Bar.

The Osteria

Norbert Niederkofler leads the restaurant programme at Ansitz Heufler, extending his Cook the Mountain philosophy from the sophisticated Atelier Moessmer and the picturesque AlpiNN. The menu leans into regional ingredients and dishes from ricotta and spinach ravioli with poppy seeds, cheesy polenta with mushrooms, South Tyrolean cold cuts and a hearty pork shank with mustard and their garden herbs.

As Norbert says, “Breakfast is an act of love. It shapes how you begin your day.” Guests sit inside the wood-clad dining room for breakfast to enjoy traditional Alpine classics such as homemade jams made from local fruit, creamy Alpine butter, fresh eggs, cheese from nearby farms, and homemade cakes.

The Lounge at Ansitz Heufler

After a long day outside or for an apero before heading out, The Lounge at Ansitz Heufler offers cosy respite for both hotel guests and external visitors. The Lounge occupies the former Smoke Kitchen or “Rauchkuchl” in the home. The signature cocktail menu is also inspired by Norbert’s Cook the Mountain philosophy. There is also a good wine selection sourcing labels from the surrounding region, such as Alto Adige.

Ansitz Heufler by Norbert Niederkofler: what’s nearby?

Ansitz Heufler lies inside Rasun di Sopra (Oberrasen), a tiny village in the upper Puster Valley, surrounded by forested slopes. The Dolomites–a UNESCO World Heritage site–rise dramatically just to the south.

Skiing. The hotel is roughly 20 minutes by car from the Kronplatz (Plan de Corones) ski area, making it a convenient base for winter sports. In summer, it abuts alpine pastures and trailheads: the national park beyond offers hikes to mountain lakes and ridges. On Kronplatz itself, visitors can ride the funicular to the summit and explore two unique museums: LUMEN, a photography gallery with sweeping vistas, and MMM Corones, a mountaineering museum founded by Reinhold Messner.

Lakes. The nearby Lago di Anterselva (Lake Antholz) is described as “a turquoise-green jewel of nature” set amid forests and 38 towering three-thousand‑meter peaks. In the winter, the frozen lake becomes a cross‑country skiing playground.

Castles. Nearby attractions include the valley’s medieval castle ruins and museums. A short drive below the hotel lie the ruins of Altrasen/Rasun Vecchia and Neurasen/Rasun Nuova castles, 13th‑century fortresses that now evoke a fairy‑tale past.

Brunico. Brunico (Bruneck) is a charming, historical town about 15 km west. It’s Brunico Castle houses the MMM Ripa museum (dedicated to mountain cultures). Local churches and chapels, like the Baroque Parish Church of St. Magdalena, are also worth a detour for architecture and frescoes.

Dining. As mentioned, there is Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler for a superb fine dining experience. On the more casual side, there is Weißes Lamm for traditional South Tyrolean fare, Ristorante b.local for date nights, or check out the natural wine selection at Restaurant Lodenwirt.
